Say no to Plastic in Ward M, Lotus Colony

Ward M, Lotus Colony , Mumbai

Maharashtra , India

Less Plastic Usage
Area Before the Project
Area After the Project

Project Description

Green Commandos of this area will make all residents of this area aware why they should not use plastics, and thus will make this area Plastic-free

Why this Project

1) Whatever plastics we use, the final destination of that plastic is empty landfills, forests, lakes, rivers and, worst, our drainage system.
2) Plastic bags are blamed for choking drains and causing floods in Mumbai four years ago that left more than 1000 people dead.
3) Plastics is non-biodegradable and it takes 1000 years for plastic bags to break down
4) As plastic breaks down, toxic substances percolate into the soil, make the soil poisonous and enter our food chain
5) Approximately 1 billion seabirds and mammals die per year by ingesting plastic bags

What Experts say

Dr. Bela Sharma (Nephrologist-Fortis Healthcare):

As we all know plastics are non biodegradable. This means they do not break down into their individual molecules by the action of decaying bacteria nor can they be digested. Not only that, they are also impervious to water and to a large extent air. Thus they form an indestructible layer which prevents the absorption of nutrients. It is extremely relevant to ‘SAY NO TO PLASTICS ‘today to safeguard our tomorrow.

Prof P D Jose (Associate Professor, Corporate Strategy & Policy, IIM Bangalore)

Increased production and uncontrolled disposal of plastics places great strain on our world from direct environmental and health impacts, including visual pollution, to second order impacts on energy demand and climate change. We need to rethink the role of plastics in our lives.

Dr. Sudarshan Maini (Founder Maini Group & Reva Electric Car)

Green Commandos projects in each area are very timely and seem the only way to get rid of plastics. We won't get rid of Plastics from our day-to-day life unless people change, and people won't change unless change happens at the Bottom. Thus Green Commandos “Bottom to Top change” is the best-researched and best-analysed way to make everyone Say no to Plastics

How this Project Works

1) Green Commandos are the most like-minded, committed, passionate and concerned people of society. These Green Commandos will drive this 'Say No to Plastics' project in their 2KM area.
2) Green Commandos can join this project as a Volunteer or Project-Lead.
3) One can directly join as a volunteer, but to join as a Project-lead would require admin approval
4) When someone would show interest to join as project-lead, someone from core-team will get in touch with this Green Commando and would explain roles and responsibilites of a Project-lead
5) Project-lead would co-ordinate all campaigns and activities with project-volunteers for this project in this 2KM area.
6) Project-lead will post project related activities on weekly basis in the “Project Activities” section of this project
7) Those with over 3 months in a project will get Green Commandos certificate for their contributions in the project.

How to run this project campaign:

8) Green Commandos will connect with all 1000-1200 people of their area making them aware and awake on why they should Say No to Plastics
9) There are different ways to connect to these 1000-1200 people of your area.

a) Co-ordinating with Residential welfare associations of your area and organizing a get-together with people at the Apartments level making them aware on why they should not accept plastics.
b) Presenatations in schools and colleges in your area to children on ‘Why say No to plastics’
c) Standing outside supermarkets, shops, parks, restaurants of your area and connecting to people. Take their Email IDs, Contact nos. and ask them to become Green Commandos and join you in this awareness movement.
d) Going house-to-house and connect to people of your 2KM area making them aware why they should not accept plastics.Take their Email IDs, Contact nos. and ask them to become Green Commandos and join you in this awareness movement.
e) Over the weekends, working professionals and students can run this drive. Over the weekdays, housewives and retired people can execute this drive.
f) While connecting to people, Green Commandos will distribute them Green Booklets on why they should Say No to Plastics.

Stickers writing “I am Plastic-Free” would also be distributed to people of these 2KM areas when connecting to them. Those people can put those stickers on their vehicles, laptops or even cubicles

g) Project-leads of all areas would be handed over these pamphlets, stickers, badges, banners for their campaigns in their areas. This way, these will reach volunteers of the project.

Last, let’s collectively bring that much-needed, much-sought but, unfortunately, much-delayed change in our Ecology, Environment and System.
